Do You Still Read the Newspaper?
Since I have been trying to write for the student newspaper, I have been picking up the Flor-Ala and a copy of The Daily Times (the local paper) whenever possible. Though I’ve been doing that, I haven’t really had time to sit down and read them the way I’d like to. But today, I made time.
As part of my creative process, I like to sit down and have some time just to read and write every day. I really made a point of that today, and picked up a newspaper to read. You may be wondering, “inspiration and creativity from a paper?” And I hear you! But you’d be surprised at how much fun it is to read a paper!
Today, many people get their news and information from broadcasts on television and increasingly from the Internet. While that is certainly convenient and oftentimes entertaining, it’s nice to get back to the basics of reading a newspaper, too.
I love feeling connected to the world around me, and reading the paper is a great way to do that. You learn about the news, events, and local activities going on, many of which are pretty important to know about! You can also stay informed about the issues that matter to you.
There’s also something that’s so…homey about reading a paper. It’s lovely to sit down in a quiet place, with a cup of something good to drink, and flip through the pages. Newsprint paper feels really luxurious compared to hard plastic keyboards, and I absolutely adore the way your fingers are smudged with dark ink after reading for a while. There’s not better feeling for a quiet morning.
And of course, there are loads of fun things you can do with a newspaper! Make some paper boats, a paper hat…but aside from the silliness, it is really nice to slow down and take some time out for you. Keeping up to date on the latest news and having a quiet moment to rejuvenate and read the paper is something that may be a bit outdated, but isn’t overrated or over appreciated in the slightest.
No matter why you’re doing it, taking the time to sit down and really read the paper is a wonderful, small thing you can do for yourself. It’s one of the simple things you can enjoy in life! So the next time you see a stack of freshly printed papers, don’t pass up the chance to take small moment out of your busy schedule to read one.
Have a great week!
