Your lifestyle, your quirk
Disorganized closets can lead to real fashion disasters. It's hard to remember where your favorite top is, where those shoes are, and where you stuck that awesome necklace – talk about a style buzzkill. When you get your closet as organized as the rest of your life, it's easy to put together cute looks and new styles. It's not hard to get everything all cleaned up, either. The worst closets may take up the better part of the morning, but it's completely worth it! Read on for tips on getting your closet organized and getting your style back on track!
One of the best ways to get your space clean is by taking what I call the "three-bag-approach.” Gab three large tote bags or garbage bags and keep them within arm's length of your clothes. You're going to use them to organize your stuff into three categories: The Certainties, The Updates, and The Donations. The Certainties are the clothes that you wear most often and couldn't possibly dream of getting rid of. Throw them in the bag you've designated for them, and keep that bag separate from the rest.
The second bag is for the clothes you're not sure about. These may need hemming, letting out, a new way to style them, whatever. Keep them in their separate bag and remember to take them to the dry cleaner or tailor. Keep them around and wear them when they're ready!
The third bag is for The Donations. These are the clothes you haven't worn in months and aren't planning to. Sock 'em away in the Donations bag and carry them to Goodwill when you're done.
It's also important to clean out any drawers you may have. I like to designate one draw for each kind of clothing – pajamas, t-shirts, etc. Always fold and put away your clothes immediately after getting them out of the dryer; that way, they won't wrinkle or clutter your closet or floor!
Shelves are important in any closet as well. You can use them to store jeans, thick sweaters, and shoes. Dust them regularly and organize your belongings the way you did with your closet. Keep the things you can't live without and the things that just need a little updating, and toss anything you haven't worn in six months or more. Chances are you probably won't again.
Keeping your closet clean isn't just about the clothes. You need to vacuum and dust regularly, too! Keep your closet floor clear of items like boxes, bags, shoes, etc., and make sure you clean the floors and shelves just like you would any other part of your house. It's also fun to find cool ways of displaying clothing, such as using mannequins or hanging pretty items in your room!
