I stopped watching The Biggest Loser in 2010 when Jillian Michaels left, as her tough-love approach with contestants was my favorite aspect of the show, and watching her yell at people somehow inspired me. Upon leaving, Jillian made it pretty clear she was ready to move on, so I didn’t expect to ever see her return. Vampires are everywhere these days. Ever since Twilight was released, everyone has been a little obsessed with the fang-donning creatures. True Blood took vamps to HBO and made them highly sexual. The Vampire Diaries also took vampires to the small screen, albeit in a more innocent way. It was makeover day on ANTM, but this model rite of passage had a twist: the girls could choose whether or not they wanted the makeover. They had to decide without knowing what the makeover plan was, but since Tyra chose their looks, they had to know that their makeovers would no doubt help them at panel. Still, two of the girls weren’t using their college brains when they said no to the new ’dos. The two most awkward competitors, Victoria and Maria, declined the new looks.Read More »

A couple nights ago, we got to see MTV’s annual, much-hyped Video Music Awards. Sure, if you watch MTV you probably saw the commercials where this year’s host, comedian Kevin Hart, tries to become a trio with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West (or Kimye, if you will), but how many of you have ever actually seen the nominated videos air on MTV? This season has brought a bunch of changes to freshen up the tired series (now in its 19th cycle), not all of which were explained in the first episode. Maybe it’s because I’m a visual learner, but the scoring system finally made sense once it was put into use. Each model is given a score out of ten for the challenge, for the fans’ responses through social media, and from each of the judges on the weekly photo. Cycle 19 brings a lot of changes to this aging reality competition. Nearly all of the judges have been replaced, the prizes and prize sponsors have changed, fan involvement has (confusingly) increased, and the show has a new theme. This season, we finally have another set of fresh girls. There’s no recycled contestants from past seasons or international spin-offs; this year features beautiful college students. In the past, it seemed like a big deal if a contestant left her education to compete, like Jane from Cycle 15 who studied at Princeton. This year, it was a requirement.Read More »
