Freshman Forum: Cute Dorm Door Decorations
The door to your dorm says a lot about you, believe it or not. Putting up a space for others to leave notes (whiteboards, cork boards) shows that you’re open to others and very friendly. Putting up handmade décor shows off your creative side. Since college is about making new friends and having new experiences, take advantage of opportunities to show off who you are! You wouldn’t believe how many people you meet just by putting up cool stuff on your door. I put up a wreath I made recently, and already several girls have complimented the wreath. It almost always leads to conversation.
Below are some great dorm door decorations I’ve drummed up – via the Web or seen in person. Just be sure that whatever you do is okay with your roommate (or do it together!) and that it adheres to fire codes and damage policy (blah blah, insert legal jargon here).
- Quilled Letters – “Quilling” is a beautiful type of paper craft that you can use to decorate many different surfaces. In this particular instance, you can decorate your initials. Grab a die-cut letter, or make your own and cover with fabric of your choice. Then read the quilling tutorials here and here to make your own. Hang on your door and voila! It’s art.
- Paper Flowers – Hand crafting paper flowers is a lot of fun, and when you make several of them and put them on a door, it creates a beautiful display that will remind you of the outdoors every time you see it. This tutorial shows you how to make a poppy-esque flower. Very simple, but with a very big impact!
- A Wreath – Make a wreath or purchase one that you love – it can be seasonal, personal, or just something you enjoy. Wire wreath forms can be purchased at most craft stores for a few dollars and manipulated to hold paper, flowers, lights, and any other combination of decorations you like.
- Lights – A simple strand of colored or white Christmas lights around a door creates a cheerful, welcoming door decoration. It’s always easier to find your keys in the light from your door, too! Pretty and practical.
I hope some of these dorm door ideas get you inspired – after all, this is YOUR living space – make it yours!
