A Basic in Black

While you’re out there in the shopping trenches choosing from all of the hot new trends, don’t forget to add a few of the basics to your wardrobe. One item that I think is a “must-have” basic item is a black turtleneck.

Not everyone likes to wear turtlenecks; in fact, I can see where they might be considered uncomfortable to wear, but even if they are not a personal favorite, you can’t deny a black turtleneck is a golden oldie and wardrobe staple for a big chunk of the fashion population. Turtlenecks are perfect for this time of year to give a visual nod to fall and for keeping your neck warm in the coming cold weather.

A basic black turtleneck is often on the wardrobe basics list for both men and women, and it makes a regular appearance in practically every clothing line. You can spend as little or as much as you like on this item, and the beauty of it is there isn’t much of a difference sans some brands telltale emblems or stitching. I buy at least one of these each year and I often pick up one in white, navy or gray.

In addition to the basic black turtleneck, another classic that works in nicely with several of the hot fashion trends of the season is the striped turtleneck. The beauty of all of these and most basics, including stripes and other prints, is they can swing from chic, classic, preppy, and boho simply by changing your shoes and accessories.

To me a black turtleneck is like a pair of cool sunglasses; just about everyone looks great in a black turtleneck, no matter what their age. Add a pair of jeans and with the right shoes and accessories this outfit can go just about anywhere. Steve Jobs worked this classic ensemble so often and it sort of became part of him, or his uniform, if you will. He gave new meaning to the phrase “a smart looking outfit.”

In addition to keeping you warm and comfortable this season, a black turtleneck will also keep you right in style. There is always a big selection of styles, knits, and colors for turtlenecks, including variations like the cowl and mock, but the traditional black turtleneck usually gives all the others a run for their money. Along with the usual fare, you can choose other textiles like lace and sheer fabrics and cuts like trapeze cuts, draped styles, and even tummy-baring styles.
