Can You Handle a Harness?

Every now and then a hot fashion trend comes down the runway that I think is very cool, but it seems like it’s just way too high fashion to go mainstream. One of these trends is this season’s belt-like harness.

This cool trend may be a bit much for more mild-mannered fashionistas, and I am not sure if I can pull it off, but I have to say I do like it. If you’re not sure what I am talking about, check out high-end fashion designer Herve Leger’s line. He and several other big names have been showing this very cool accessory in their recent shows.

A harness is exactly that: it’s a belt-like accessory with multiple straps that is worn on the upper body just like it would be worn on a horse or other animal. Now that I am describing it I admit it truly sounds terrible, a bit naughty, and even ugly, but I think it definitely sounds worse than it looks. Of course, this interesting piece is not for everyone, but once you get past some visuals and comparisons it’s actually pretty cool-looking when you see it on. For the sake of fashion the harness is definitely eye-catching, makes a statement, and I guess you could even say it’s a bit retro with a menswear vibe.

I prefer the ones worn on the upper body, but this piece is also being shown in styles that can be worn on the hips like an elaborate belt or garter-like accessory. Some designers are also showing this for men, but I think women give it a more appealing, softer look.

Despite the fact it’s being shown in leather and other textiles with a rougher feel to them, this interesting accessory is being paired on the runway and magazine layouts with ultra-feminine dresses and tops in luxury materials and flowing styles. They are also being paired with ultra-casual pieces like cotton t-shirts.

I personally think they work best with more feminine pieces to carry on the high fashion vibe as opposed to more tailored, structured pieces, but I think they would look cool with both lightweight and heavy knit sweaters when it gets cold.

It will be interesting to see how far off the catwalk this trend goes, but if you’re looking for something unusual to shake up your wardrobe, this item is it.
