Chic Creatures
The retro trend is so hot, it’s still touching on every aspect of fashion. We are seeing it being used on clothes, footwear, and accessories. One hot trend that has been making its way across the pages of several high fashion magazines and charming the fashion world is serpent jewelry.
I really don’t care for creepy crawling things at all, but much to my surprise, I like this trend. Of course, the fact they are not real has something to do with it. I am sure I am not alone in not liking real snakes, but I have to ask, “Is it just me, who thinks this is such an odd time of the year to see this trend hit such popularity?” I would have expected to see this trend back at the start of summer along with the other critters. Oh well, I guess it makes it all the more fun and more of a novelty.
Serpent jewelry isn’t exactly new to the fashion scene; it has been rearing its head from time to time in the fashion world for years. The August issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine is featuring a Bulgari piece that is so stunning it’s easy to completely over look the serpent head at the end. Bazaar points out this style of jewelry was “a “hit when they were introduced in the 1940s, and have continued to rule the wrists of fashion icons through the years.” The piece goes on to point out that Elizabeth Taylor wore such jewelry on the set of the movie Cleopatra.
If you’re a fan of more recent and hip fashion eras snakes go ahead and let this trend creep up on you. Bazaar also pointed
out that the salute to the serpent, particularly using the head to conceal the face of a watch is a nod to its ’60s and ’70s ancestors. I have some pretty stylish relatives and I remember seeing snake bracelets crawling up the arms of several fashionistas when I was younger.
Don’t worry, it’s true the Bulgari piece featured in Bazaar is way out of most folks’ league, but snakes have once again become a muse for both high-end artists and fine jewelry lines. No matter what your budget is, you will find affordable versions to let you look lux for less if you want to work this hot trend. The price points on these silvery and gold tone serpents slither from high to low.
Bracelets are getting lots of attention and will be my choice if I work this hot jewelry trend, but look out for snakes on earrings, necklaces, and rings. Keep an eye out for this quirky but very chic creature as embellishment on belts, shoes, and on some garments.
