Your lifestyle, your quirk
You may not want to wear them all the time, but you can never have too many t-shirts; they are great wardrobe staples all year long. In the cold they can keep you warm while you’re trying to look cute under stylish sweaters, and they are absolutely perfect for transitional and warm weather dressing.
One popular and bountiful resource for t-shirts and other garments perfect for layering is American Apparel. American Apparel has been on the fashion scene since 1989, and has been in and out of the spotlight due to its cool t-shirts and its controversial ads and other issues. I have my opinion on all the controversy, like everyone else, but there is no denying these t-shirts are hot fashion items and perfect for layering.
I will be honest and admit that I don’t wear this brand. Some of the items are pretty tame and mainstream, although the brand favors using pretty racy ads. I didn’t have much luck with the fit; I think the brand favors folks with different body types than mine. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t relieved...the ads and some of the stories in the media are disturbing, so my conscience would not let me make a purchase even if what I wanted had fit.
I haven’t had second thoughts about passing on a purchase, as there are too many other brands to support, but I will give American Apparel props for the variety of style and color options it offers. In my opinion, the ads are as icky as they are clever. The pieces are perfect for working kitschy retro trends while still looking contemporary. If you’re a fan of the ’80s, you could build a whole wardrobe, from undergarments to outerwear.
With the way things are going, it possible these garments might even become collectors’ items. Who knows, you might want to get them while they are hot. All things aside, good, bad, or ugly, American Apparel has a spot in this retro fashion salute. The looks that can be created with their line are definitely influenced by previous decades. You can create outfits for days with all of the minis, leggings, t-shirts, and dresses, not to mention the slew of accessories like leg warmers and headbands. The bright colors and fabrication makes anything from this label perfect for transitional dressing and will take you right through the year without missing a beat or spending time packed away for next season.
