Fall for Feathers Now, Not Later
Feathers are one of my favorite embellishments in the fashion world. It seems like years ago, women wore feathers much more often and for everyday wear, rather than waiting for special occasions like they do now. Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong era, so I am always excited when feathers show up in fashion.
Feathers are obviously a great way to add a bit of glamour to your wardrobe, but they can also simply change the look of an item or garment that you wear every day. The holidays are just around the corner and feathers will be perfect for parties and hitting the town, but I say why wait?
Every good fashionista knows that accessories are the easiest and most frugal way to stretch your wardrobe, so with a little imagination and a whole
lot of feathers you can help your wardrobe work overtime. With a little fluff of feathers, it’s possible for a basic dress to show up for work twice in the same week and still go out on a hot date.
People still don’t wear them as often as I would like, but feathers have become more mainstream lately, so you can usually find a whole flock of feather embellished clothes, accessories, and shoes to choose from. If you’re allergic or just don’t want to handle real feathers, you always have the option of feather prints and graphics.
Some feathers are dressier and flashier than others. Color can also play a part in how dramatic or demure you want to be. Black is always good for drama, and color is good for fun. Ostrich feathers are a good choice for a really fancy, more feminine look, where a flatter feather like that of a peacock or pheasant is more tailored and demure.
If you plan on working this fun embellishment for an everyday look, my only suggestion is feathers on top or bottom. In other words, choose a pretty headband or pair of shoes, but not both. Feathers are fancy – don’t overdo it. Another idea is carrying a pretty feathered handbag or purse, or just go with a pair of feathered cuffs or place a pin on a simple
shirt or sweater.
If you have been curious about giving feathers a try, now is the time. Fall and of course the winter holidays are the perfect time of year, but one very cool thing is that most feathers can actually be worn all year long.
