A Flash of Fall
Skirt lengths often take their cues from the weather, but so far skirts have lowered even though the temperature hasn’t just yet. Things are supposed to cool down for fall, but they are getting turned up a few notches with thigh-high slits.
Slits in skirts aren’t anything new; in fact, they are often simply part of the construction and function of the skirt. But things aren’t that simple this year. These slits get the job done, but they are more for fashion than function. You may think it’s odd to call this garment detail a trend, but it’s showing up in so many different designers’ collections that it makes sense to me.

These slits are definitely dramatic and show a lot of leg, but it works and doesn’t have to be overly sexy. It can be a subtly, sexy detail that blends in nicely for the ladylike look and also works with several of the other fashion trends we are seeing. For instance, lots of fashions in the ’70s also showed a bit of leg.
High slits are definitely a little naughty, but a longer skirt with a high slit adds a nice feminine touch, where a high slit on a mini is usually too much. In addition to adding a little element of surprise to the often-matronly skirt length, this accent tastefully allows you to show off this season’s interesting hosiery and fabulous shoes and boots. One of these skirts also adds a nice contrast of male and female energy when you pair it with menswear tops and accessories.
Designers have come up with some pretty clever ideas like combining unusual fabrics like leather, sheers, denim and wool with this sexy little accent. Putting a thigh high slit on a serious grey flannel skirt not only has the element of surprise, but it gives this sexy accent a bit more charm that could very easily work for daytime. When the temperature drops a bit more, simply add tights and a pair of cool boots.
Some designers have taken this trend to the max, with extra special accents like double slits, zippers, and buttons, and some are using contrasting fabric that is exposed by the slit when you move or walk. If you’re not sure if this look will work for you during the day, look for this accent on other garments that are strictly for evening or on outerwear.
