Geek Chic

There is no doubt in my mind that it’s going to be a style-filled summer; so far what’s been coming down the catwalks for spring is pretty fabulous. A big chunk of the fashions we are seeing are ultra-fabulous, ultra-glam, and very sexy but sometimes you want to go another route. This season is definitely all about being a girl, and one look that is a cool option, thanks to current quirky cuties like Zooey Deschanel, is the cool preppy look or cool geek-ette.

The ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s had some really interesting and fun styles, but I like to reach back a bit further for some fashion blasts from the past. This is one of my favorites. As much as I love fashion, I usually end up putting comfort first, and the sex kitten look really isn’t me. What I like is this lets me work in another one of my favorites: menswear with a definite feminine vibe. You work your sexy librarian, girl. You may get lucky raiding your own or someone else’s closet for some authentic pieces this spring, which is very cool, especially for those of us on a budget, but what is a new season without even a little shopping spree? The good news is there are a few key pieces that will make working this look effortless.

For shoes, check out penny and tasseled loafers or menswear-inspired oxfords. You can stick to basics like black, white, or brown, but do consider this season’s brights and neons for color. You can also go for a more feminine look with pointed slingback flats or pin heels. For handbags, check out rattan and leather combos, old school canvas totes, and handheld Birkin-esque purses. As far as jewelry and other accessories go, you want to look for pearls, ladylike watches, and headbands with bows. The absolute must-haves are oversized geek-chic sunglasses with darker frames like black or tortoise shell.

Add these accessories to items you already have in your closet, like full skirts with longer hemlines. You can also go with pencil skirts. Try rolling up the legs of your straight jeans, or tying an oxford shirt at the waist. Within minutes, you’re instantly transformed into a modern-day Audrey Hepburn or sexy librarian. Now is the time to grab a coffee or drink with your vintage-wearing gal pal. Even if you have vowed to “just say no to secondhand clothes,” you can tag along on a thrift store trip even if it’s just for ideas and some inspiration.
