Get Your Shine On

It’s so tempting to start spending right now on all of the fabulous fashions that are coming down the runway for fall 2012. These previews are great for giving us the heads-up on what is going to be hot this fall, but the sneak peek can also be a double-edged sword. What I try to do before I break out my wallet is to decide if I can wear the item now or later.

If I can’t wear it now, I try to sit tight and hope for the best for availability, but if it’s something I can wear while the temperature is still high, then by all means if it’s in my budget it’s a go.

One of the hot trends for fall 2012 that would work for right now is metallic fabrics. One thing to remember about this trend is it includes all types of fabrics: synthetics, natural fibers, and don’t forget leather. If you plan on working this trend into your current wardrobe, I suggest you opt for lighter fabrics, but do consider leather.

Metallic fabric is one of those trends you either love or hate, and you don’t have to actually wear it yourself to love it or hate it. In any color the fabric is usually pretty, in fact gorgeous, but too much of a good thing can be bad. But don’t write this fabrication and fashion trend off just yet – just proceed with caution.

Going all out a la Stacy Keibler at the Oscars may be a bit much for the average gal, but in small doses, this trend doesn’t have to wait for special occasions. On a positive note, nothing says disco and the ’70s and ’80s like this fabric does. So for disco fans, this trend coming down the runway for 2012 is a dream come true. On the flip side, unless you’re going for an authentic disco look, when you choose garments in metallic, pair them with fabrics that are not as glam. For example, metallic leggings or any bottom would be best paired with a simple top, perhaps a plain white t-shirt rather than one in the same fabrication.

Unless you’re planning to go somewhere really special, your best bet is to start with a simple garment, accessory, or a fabulous pair of shoes. Derek Lam has a pair of gold oxfords that I would wear in a heartbeat. I would be more than happy to make room for in my closet, but for now I will just admire from afar. You can always literally dip your toe or finger in this trend by wearing a metallic nail polish and start there.
