A Go-To for Guys
Women have lots of items we call “go-to” items. These are garments or accessories that we grab when we need to achieve certain look, or even just a feeling. For instance, a go-to item could be that LBD that makes you feel or look great, or that white blouse that adds just the right professional touch when you need it. A go-to item can be something very unique and personal, or something common that lots of other women also utilize. The men don’t have as much stuff as we do, but you may have a few of your own go-to items, and one thing that most guys should own is a navy blue blazer.
This season, the menswear look is hot for both men and women, so it would not be so bad for women to own one of these items, too. Sorry guys, it probably seems like we just can’t let you have anything of your own.
To me, the second most important question when you’re out shopping (after “Can I afford it?”) is “How often will I wear this?” I love unusual items,
but usually it’s all about basics, and can a garment do what I like to call fashion multitasking?
There are several clothing items that most stylists agree every red-blooded male should have in his closet; one of these items a navy blue blazer. You could easily say the navy blue blazer is for men what the LBD is for women. Just like our LBD, the navy blue blazer can be dressed up or down with the right accessories and shoes, and it can go practically anywhere. Those of you who wear or wore school uniforms may already have a jump on this or be so over wearing one, but if you’ve got reservations…well, get over them.
The novice fashionisto may also look at this item as boring and limited, so here are a few ideas to get the most bang for your buck, or blazer. Most of these outfit ideas could easily be considered go-to outfits if your ever stuck or not sure.
- Dark slacks make an instant work or date outfit; feel free to add a tie.
- Channel your inner preppy guy with khakis and white button-down; this is a nice alternative to jeans.
- Pair your navy blazer with jeans, either gently worn or distressed for a perfect date outfit.
- Top off a pair of black slacks and t-neck for another great date outfit, perhaps meeting the parents for brunch.
- Skip the traditional shirt or sweater and pair your blazer with one of this season’s graphic t-shirts or a hoodie. Add jeans or khakis for a casual but very cool look. Don’t forget to finish your look with cool shoes and a few accessories, like pocket squares, tie clips, and cuff links.
