His Becomes Hers

Boyfriend jeans are my favorite style of jeans, so the fact they are showing up in most magazines as one of the hottest styles this season is making me very happy.  Although I like to stay current with what is going on in fashion, when I find something that I love, I will wear it no matter what.

Some of you may not agree, but I like to call the boyfriend style of jeans a classic because it always has a loyal fan base. In addition to yours truly, this style is a favorite of lots of women. This style gets more attention some years more than others; this year, celebrity fashionistas like Rihanna and Sarah Jessica Parker have been photographed rocking them. It’s interesting that no matter how cool an item is (or in some cases, isn’t), it always stirs up some excitement when it’s not just everyday fashionistas who are embracing it.

Just like all of  the other menswear items we steal, I mean borrow from the guys, there is something playful, fun, and kind of sexy about wearing their jeans. In fact, the word “Boyfriend” has become somewhat of an official fashion term to describe the fit of some garments. Magazines and designer often use this term to describe the fit of a garment, and if that isn’t proof enough, just ask good old Wikipedia.

For a little style inspiration, you want to look like you’re wearing your guy’s jeans. The reason why can be left to the imagination. Only you need to know if there is even an actual him to borrow jeans from. Depending on your top, shoes, and accessories, you can create looks that play off of the masculine vibe of the boyfriend jeans. One of my favorite looks is to go “all girl” with ultra-glam shoes and feminine-looking top, but a button-down or t-shirt with menswear shoes is also another favorite look.

The boyfriend cut is usually part of most women’s jean brands, but I usually do my own thing and wear actual men’s jeans a few sizes too big and too long.  But if this is your first time working this trend, in addition to choosing women’s jeans that are specifically styled for this look there are a few sites you can check out for helpful dos and don’ts, like O Canada.com and Adorned magazine.

My thought is this is truly one of the trends to just have fun with, so relax – there really aren’t any rules. I will say that unless you’re a diehard fan of this look like me, I suggest you try to find jeans that are inexpensive so you can afford to check out all of the rest of the denim trends that are slated to be hot this season.
