Just Hanging Kinda Loose
As far as I am concerned, it’s officially sweater season. It’s not what I call really cold, but I have had to wear one every day for the last couple of weeks. My guess is most of you are unpacking your stash or adding to your current sweater collection. One style that you just might find if you look way in the back of your closet is one of this season’s hot sweater trends: the cowl neck.
A cowl neck may not always be the hottest sweater trend, but this sweater style makes its presence known each season, and it is already starting to show up in magazines and on store racks. I would not be surprised if it has a celebrity fashionista following.
If you or a relative were a fan of this sweater in the ’80s, you’re in luck, as you might be able to pull a few cowl neck sweaters out of retirement. Since we are also having a bit of a retro trend, you probably can still wear them and still look stylish. If they are solid colors it’s a no-brainer, but do check out what’s on the racks and catwalk.
Now, call me crazy, because as much as I like the cowl neck sweater, I always think it looks great on everyone except me. Give me a traditional turtleneck instead. I do get tempted when I see them on other folks, but as much as I hate to pass on a good trend, I will be skipping this sweater’s latest turn around the fashion block.
For fans of this sweater, practically every trend for embellishments, color, and textures is represented in this season’s offerings of the cowl neck sweater. From your basic cut that hits the waist with trousers, skirts, and jeans, to sweater dresses worn alone or over leggings, you’re sure to find something that you will fall in love with and feel warm and cozy in.
You would usually wear this type of sweater full and loose around your neck, but there are quite a few clever and actually quite sexy twists you can take with this sweater style. One suggestion is to let the loose neckline really show off your bare neck, or even your shoulders. Another idea is to add an oversized necklace or some funky pins for a different look. When things get a little cooler, you can also fill in the gap with a pretty sweater, or add a tight-fitting turtleneck for an interesting contrast.
