Let’s Get Waisted: Statement and Wide Belts that Cinch

in category of Fashion, Tracey Vest

The 1970s are still going strong as one of the major influences in the fashion world. One of the best things about the 1970s is that along with all the very cool fashions it produced, the 1970s is one of the easiest fashion eras to copy without spending a lot of money. If this is one of the looks you want to work this season, there are several key fashion items you can add to your current wardrobe that will instantly transport you back to the time of shag rugs, lava lamps, and the birth of Earth Day.

One of these magical fashion items is the wide belt. Earlier this year we saw decorative, oversized belts with interesting buckles. All of these styles had a definite ’70s flavor and were usually worn loosely at the waist, though some styles rested on the hips. The focus is still on the waist, but the belts are wider and the waist is cinched in almost corset-like. In fact, corset belts are included in the wide belt mix. When I say wide, I mean wide, like a minimum of three inches to start. These wide belts have a more feminine feeling because of the cinched waist, and are strictly for the girls. One fabulous feature of a wide belt is in addition to adding style, it can subtract a few inches off your waist by creating an optical illusion. The Stylist.com has a piece and a slideshow showing how fashionistas over the fashion decades have let this item work its magic for them: stylelist.com In addition to its magical properties, several of the other belt styles we are seeing can be unisex, but this time around, this trend seems to be more popular with the ladies. Wide belts work the ’70s vibe with a classic recognizable ’70s look, but they might not be the most comfortable accessory. Be sure to factor comfort in and make sure it’s not too tight. If you want a defined hourglass figure or simply want to create the illusion of one, try a wide belt. Check out buckles, laces, and all of the interesting closures that are available. Who knows, you might even come across a wide version of the double wrap belt. Get ready to shake your booty in a peasant blouse and jeans, or jumpsuit with matching boots. For a softer, more romantic gypsy look, try a fringed wide belt over a pheasant blouse and maxi skirt.
