Your lifestyle, your quirk
Wardrobe basics may not be the most glamorous or expensive pieces in your closet, but they are pure gold no matter what fabric they are made of. One wardrobe basic that you need to make sure you have in your closet is a denim shirt.
This is a simple garment, but don’t let its mild-mannered appearance fool you. Yes, a denim shirt is simple, but it’s also simply fabulous. One of my favorite things about a denim shirt is that you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to get one that is stylish and well-made. Even if you don’t spend a lot of money, this garment usually holds up wear after wear and in the wash. In fact, the further you get from high fashion labels and high price tags, the more likely you are to end up with an authentic-looking denim shirt.
Denim shirts with a rustic or western look happen to be hot right now. Both of these styles are favorites of mine and should be easy to find when you’re out shopping. You should not have much trouble, but if you do, why not check out the men’s department? Hell, if you have a willing male in your life, perhaps you can beg, borrow, or resort to other tactics to score one.
As far as washes go, you have just as many options as you would have for a pair of jeans. You can choose colors that range from near white to dark indigo blue. I suggest you lean to the dark side and watch your shirt “gains character” as it fades.
Unless you’re seriously going to offend a strict dress code, you can wear a denim shirt just about with anything and just about anywhere, even a formal event. Just channel a bit of Ralph Lauren flavor. Be sure to work a little denim on denim fashion magic and wear your shirt with your favorite denim jeans or skirt. But keep in mind your denim shades don’t have to match.
A denim shirt is also perfect for working the hot menswear look: one idea is to top off a pretty feminine piece like a floral maxi or full-legged trousers with a denim shirt, or simply pair it with menswear-inspired trousers or skirt. As far as accessories go, you can play up the menswear or rustic vibe, or go in the other direction with ultra-feminine pieces.
I will be doing some bargain hunting myself, but a great-looking denim shirt is worth whatever price you choose to pay. I believe if you love something and it’s versatile, it’s always a bargain. A denim shirt could almost be called priceless, because it will take you through the rest of the summer and right into fall.
