Your lifestyle, your quirk
The ultra-feminine, ladylike look will continue to be a hot trend for fall 2012, but if you’re a fan of menswear, your time has also come. From what I am seeing, both of these looks will be getting equal time as things cool down. So as far as keeping up with what’s going on in fashion, you can get your girl or boy on, or you can do both at the same time.
The term “boyfriend” is being used to describe several items of clothing and footwear for fall, and one key piece for creating fabulous menswear looks is the boyfriend cardigan.
A boyfriend cardigan is a roomy sweater that is also called an oversized or grandfather cardigan. This style of sweater has the same menswear flavor and vibe as boyfriend jeans. The idea behind the whole boyfriend trend is that you swiped stuff from your boyfriend’s closet. Don’t let the name send you out looking for men if you’re single; while you can literally wear your guy’s stuff, you’re probably better off purchasing your own.
Depending on the style of knit, your accessories and shoes, you can wear one of these comfy cardigan sweaters just about anywhere. Because the temperature is still high, you will want to go with a lighter textile like cotton or cashmere for now, and then add heavier knits and textiles into the mix as we get further into the season.
A cardigan often has a menswear flavor to it all by itself, but it blends in perfectly with several other looks we are seeing this season. For a never-fail casual look, pair one of these cozy sweaters with jeans and a pretty t-shirt. You can get really get your girl on by adding pearls or a pretty statement necklace for a feminine touch, or continue the menswear vibe with an interesting scarf or a fun tie around your neck. A more polished look would be to pair an oversized cardigan with a skirt or trousers and a silk blouse. Another stylish idea is to layer one of these cardigans over one of this season’s ladylike dresses for a bit of yin and yang.
An oversized cardigan can give any dress a boho chic look if you ever need to take things down a notch, and it’s not too early for a faux fur collar for a look that takes you in the other direction. A quick evening look could be to pair a cardigan with a bare camisole. Just add a bit of jewelry and fabulous footwear, depending on the overall look you’re going for.
