Movie Buff Costume

Call me crazy, but for someone who normally doesn’t like scary things, I am a big fan of Alfred Hitchcock movies. Maybe it’s because with the exception of Psycho and The Birds, two of my favorites, there isn’t much gore.

I have a bunch of old videos that I watch on the regular, and I am always down for one on TV, so you know I will be making my way to the closest movie theater when they release the movie Hitchcock, due in theaters November 23rd.

The movie was featured in a recent People magazine issue and described as “examining the iconic director’s own love story while he filmed the horror classic Psycho.” I have heard additional tidbits here and there concerning affairs of the heart, but I won’t say much more to avoid committing a spoiler crime.

Since I am a fan of fashion and movies, what I am really looking forward to seeing is how they transform Scarlet Johansson and Jessica Biel into Janet Leigh and Vera Miles. What I find interesting is if you look at some of the stills, you will notice a lot of the costumes would fit it perfectly with what’s going on today in fashion.

Since Hitchcock and some of his characters are iconic symbols for all things scary, I thought it might be fun to dress up as the director or a well-recognized character from one of his movies. Some of you younger folks may have to Google some images from the actual films to copy the looks, but most folks should be able to do it from memory.

For Alfred Hitchcock, you may want to own a few extra pounds and bald head, but a basic white shirt, black suit, and tie should do the trick for a costume.

For Vera Miles/Jessica Biel, a tweed suit will channel her character; pair it with black pumps and pearls.

For Janet Leigh/Scarlet Johansson, go with a cashmere crewneck or twinset, pencil skirt, black pumps, and pearls.

It’s not the most elaborate costume, but what’s cool about this idea is it could work for a last-minute party invitation, and most of the items may already be in your wardrobe. If they aren’t and you make a few purchases, you can definitely work them into your regular clothing. You will need a blond wig for both of the ladies costumes to get the full effect, but you can also wear that after Halloween if you’re so inclined.
