One Chic Pony

One of my favorite textiles is getting some attention and I think it’s perfect for this time of year. I have a serious weakness for pony hair. I currently have several items in this cool textile in my possession, but after seeing some of the items coming down the runway, I am making it a mission to add a few more.

Pony hair, or calf hair, is also referred to as hair on hide. I can see where this may be a controversial choice and I try not to
think too much about its origin, but being a leather fan, this textile is hard to resist. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this textile, it is a hide that has a “hairy” texture as opposed to the smooth feeling of leather or suede. You can read more about it here.

This textile can be a little pricey and may not the most practical choice, but I have never been sorry or disappointed with a purchase. This is definitely one of my weaknesses, but lucky for me there are lots of options that won’t put you in the poorhouse

This textile shows up just about every year, and you can find something stylish that works for you without much trouble. It’s most common to find pony hair on shoes, handbags and belts, and other accessories, but there are lots of other options. You have your choice of full-on garments like coats, skirts, and vests, but they can be pricey. To give this trend a try or if you’re on a budget, a better idea may be an item with pony hair decoration or embellishment.

I usually take my pony hair straight up as the primary textile. My favorite is leopard print, but this season designers have gone wild. They are mixing pony hair prints in all colors, and both prints and solids are together on one item, along with other trims and findings. You will be seeing leopard with zebra, cow prints with snakeskin, and pony hair mixed with flat leather.

I prefer items in their natural colors, but you bolder fashionistas can try mixing a red zebra with leopard, or tiger print with turquoise snakeskin. No matter how you want to ride this pony, I suggest you get at least one item made out of this trendy textile to add to your wardrobe.

For those of you who don’t do leather, check out some of the fun faux versions that are just as cool-looking. Again, if you’re just testing the waters, you can always try it on for size with something small. For jewelry there are rings, bracelets, and necklaces, or you can opt for a headband, gloves, a wallet, or even a cool collar.
