Prom Shoe Checklist

After the big decision on what dress you will wear for the big night, it’s time to move on to the shoes. After “do they match the dress,” you should take into consideration a few key points. Here are a few tips and suggestions to help make this search successful and less painful. Even if you’re one of those gals who found fabulous shoes first and is dressing from the bottom up, you can still use a few of these tips to make sure you can dance the night away in style and comfort. Scan magazines and stores for looks you like, pay attention to which styles of shoes work with which hemlines, etc. If you don’t have time to hit the stores, a great idea is to shop the internet. Many sites have programs that allow you to create outfits to get ideas. If you’re wearing open-toed shoes, don't forget the pedicure! Check to make sure that your polish is a good match for your prom shoes and dress. If you're doing it yourself, be sure to do it early in the day, so you don't have to rush. If you’re going to a salon, make your appointment early so you’re not left scrambling or completely out of luck. The best time to try on shoes is later in the day, so save the shoe stores or shoe department for after lunch or coffee. Feet swell as the day progresses, so you'll want to be sure the fit is right for the big night. Decide if you’re going to wear hosiery or not. If you opt for hose, take a pair with you while you shop. Of course, you'll want your prom shoes to be fabulous, but comfort still rules. Look for shoes that you'll be able to wear all night and dance in. I love to look at killer heels, but I always opt for wedge platforms. Another idea is a cute pair of flats for the occasion, or as a backup shoe if your feet run out of steam. Practice wearing your prom shoes around the house for a couple hours a day, trying a few dance moves, starting a couple of weeks before the prom. If you’re not really accustomed to wearing higher heels, you might want to start your catwalk sessions a bit earlier. You might even want to match your height to your date’s, if that’s an issue.
