Special Tanks

Tank tops are the perfect garments for when the temperature goes sky high, but they can get a little boring if you stick with the usual fare of cottons or other textiles in basic colors like black, white, and gray. Even prints can get old. Now, don’t get me wrong, I have an ample collection of basic color tanks in my closet, but it’s always nice to take things up a notch and look special, even if there is no special reason. A nice alternative to a basic tank is an embellished tank top or one in an unusual or even a luxury fabric.

This summer you have several options for choosing a decorative tank top. One option is a bit of bling, try embellishments like sequins, rhinestones, or perhaps even a bit of glitter. You can pair these tops with jeans, skirts, and full-legged trousers. You can also opt for a pretty tank in a fabric that isn’t typically used for such basic pieces, like sheer chiffon, silk, or lace. Like several of the other trends we are seeing this season, some of these tanks have a bit of a retro vibe to them, but work well with contemporary separates. If you’re going for a more casual look, you may want to add a few tanks with logos or fun graphic prints on the front and back. Both of these types of embellished tank tops also look great with jeans and shorts.

To mix things up a bit, try wearing a pretty sheer or silky tank in the daytime with jeans or a denim skirt, or pair a funky logo tank with leather or dress slacks for stepping out on the town in the evening. Embellished tanks are another one of the trends to have fun with, so don’t worry about matching or color coordinating. Feel free to wear a multicolored logo tank top with a printed skirt or flowing floral print pajama pants.

Another option is to wear more than one tank at a time and layer them over each other. You will be amazed at what you come up with and how interesting different textile combos look together. One plus for this trend is you can skip the jewelry…or keep it simple and just add earrings and a couple of interesting bracelets.

You can also layer these tanks over t-shirts for work or on cooler days. This cute combo is a nice alternative to simply wearing a summer t-shirt all by itself.
