Your lifestyle, your quirk
What I love about summer 2012 is that there are so many so many different types of styles, looks, and fashion eras to choose from. No matter what or where your tastes run to, you will find just what you’re looking for to work a look that is just right for you. I am loving all of the girly, over-the-top ladylike looks and the earlier retro styles, but you folks with a bit more of an edge can check out a current fashion trend that is also a retro salute to the '80s: studs and spikes.
Most fashionistas are always ready for something new, but I think just about everyone is on a budget these days; while we saw a bit of this over the cooler seasons, it’s getting a second wind this summer, and it will easily transition into fall 2012. Another interesting feature of the stud and spike trend is that it can easily go from retro to right now, depending on the rest of your outfit.
Traditionally we see studs and spikes on heavier fabrics and textiles like leather, denim, and canvas, but this cool embellishment is starting to show up on bright colors, pastels, and much more delicate and feminine fabrics, giving it a new look that is actually quite interesting.
You might think this stud embellishment is limiting because it has a casual, almost rocker feel, but that is not the case. I have come across quite a few items that I would easily call pretty, feminine, and classy. In addition to the typical items that have this cool embellishment, like shoes, handbags, and belts, we are now seeing studs and spikes on items like shirt lapels, edges, and hems, for both women and men. You will find all of the cool studded belts, handbags, and boots in both gold and silver, but also keep an eye out for accessories and shoes that have a bit more of a feminine feeling to them, like strappy sandals and crown-like headbands.
The stud embellishment definitely has its roots with the rocker set but it has taken on a new life on lots of this season's fashion items. I would not say it can swing preppy, but it can definitely go high-end and polished. One fun fashion idea would be to pair a floral silk dress with a pair of studded strappy sandals and matching belt for an edgy but all-girl look.
