Style, Quirk, or It Just Don’t Work? Rihanna’s Thigh-High Trench

Rihanna is everywhere you look, and even in places you may not be looking. If she isn’t getting attention for her wardrobe choices, she is getting attention for her choices in the dating department. It seems like Rihanna doesn’t get a minute of privacy; I would pass her a tissue and offer a hug, but something tells me she doesn’t mind the attention one bit. Celebuzz.com posted yet one more picture of the songstress arriving for dinner in Sydney, Australia, wearing a trench coat, high heels, and her gorgeous smile.

I think she is stunning, but most of her wardrobe choices (or lack thereof) are way out of my league. But on this rare occasion, not only do I think she looks fabulous, I would wear this ensemble myself! Several of my fellow bloggers have given this look the thumbs-down; the folks at Hollywood Life wrote, “Sure, trench coats are practical, classic and a definite style staple — but they are meant to be worn as outerwear!” I agree, but that’s what is so cool about this ensemble Rihanna put together. She took a garment that is traditionally for outerwear and completely rocked it. Now, she isn’t the first to pull this fashion feat off; Kirsten Dunst turned a navy Burberry trench into a dress in early December 2011 at the Hollywood Reporters Power 100 Breakfast. I think either the women or their stylists were quite clever, and both looked great, but Rihanna took this look and made it sizzle. This look is similar to the sexy librarian. A woman showing up at your door in nothing but a trench coat and heels would be a welcomed visitor at most doors. To me, the sexy red heels and lips could easily be swapped out for sensible black pumps and horn-rimmed glasses to do your taxes. Hollywood Life went on to scold the fierce fashionista for her fashion choice and speculate what would have happened if the restaurant was too warm and the trench coat needed to come off. From the looks of the flowing fabric, my guess is that scenario probably had been thought out or could have been part of the agenda for attention. I doubt she needs a shoulder to cry on, and I have to laugh at my coming to Rihanna’s defense, but it’s ironic to me that this “scandalous” outfit she put together is actually one of the more demure and tasteful ensembles she has worn.
