Then and Now: Circle Skirts

Several of the garments that are trending this season are blasts from the past, and one in particular is the circle skirt. I love this style, although I am a little self-conscious worrying about looking like a hippie. I usually give in once I see them on other gals and in magazines. The circle skirt for warm weather 2012 is a bit different from the retro one that probably comes to mind, but just as cool. It’s too bad there isn’t a sexier or clever name, but it works.

A circle skirt is self-explanatory: if you have a circle of fabric and cut a hole in it, pull it up and bam, you would have a circle skirt. Those of you who sew could easily make one, but you don’t have to look too far to find one of these skirts.

Several celebrities have been seen rocking this versatile trend; it can be worn casual, cute and chic, or seriously sexy. Casual could be just below the knee. This length would be perfect for going off to work or out on the town. Cute would definitely be the mini skirt length. What is also nice about this skirt style is it works with just about any fabric, from flirty silk to denim or lightweight wool. For maximum drama, I suggest a longer, almost maxi length for a sexy ’50s look, like we have been seeing from designers like Dolce & Gabanna.

Fullness is definitely part of this skirt’s charm, but if you’re a bit hip-conscious, you may want to skip this trend because even ultra-thin fashionsistas have hips in this skirt style. You can pair your circle skit with just about any type of top or jacket. Your best bet is to choose a top that is fitted or that you can tuck in to give yourself a nice defined waist and work that hourglass figure trend. As far as shoes go, it’s up to you; this skirt looks great with both flats and heels. Do add some interesting hosiery to show off your legs and don’t forget to accessories. A key item is an interesting belt and perhaps a statement necklace.
