Then and Now: Jumpsuits

in category of Fashion, Tracey Vest

Both the ’70s and ’80 s fashion influence is still going strong, and one of the fashions that keeps coming came back for a lap around the fashion block is the jumpsuit. The jumpsuit not only jumps in and out, it keeps coming back in different forms. In honor of the heat, it’s the strapless jumpsuit that is getting a lot of attention.

This isn’t one of my favorites; in fact, I have to honestly say I have never even tried one on. This is one fashion item I just know isn’t for me, but each year I see several fellow fashionistas that wear them quite well. These women are called Glamazons. These are usually taller gals that have a whole lot of sexy going on…but strapless jumpsuits can also look sweet and sassy. I think it also depends on the person and what accessories and shoes they work with this trend.

This garment just says sexy to me, but now that warm weather is finally here, it is time to show off a bit more skin. So work this trend while it’s hot for day or night. What I do like is the fact that although it’s basically a pair of pants, this stylish piece can go just about anywhere. The strapless jumpsuit has even been a favorite of several fashionistas both on magazine pages on the red carpet.

Jennifer Lopez often rocks this item, and usually causes quite a sensation. Strapless jumpsuits are not necessarily a strictly warm weather garment because they’re perfect for an evening out on the town all year long. You might not want to wear a strapless jumpsuit to work, especially without some sort of jacket or sweater, but they can go just about anywhere else. Strapless jumpsuits also make nice swimsuit cover-ups and would be perfect to take on vacation.

This trend might be a bit intimidating for fuller-figured gals, so there are a few variations that can make this garment a bit more body type-friendly, like string and spaghetti strap ties, bloused versions, and detailing like ruffles. Attaching thin straps may be cheating a bit, but you get the bare look and feel secure at the same time. Try out different leg styles to see which is most flattering for your body type. Styles range from extremely full and flowing to leggings or harem pants. You can really celebrate the warm weather with log shorts or a romper-type jumpsuit. As far as fabrics go, you will want to go with something that drapes well and has that cool ’70 s and ’80s flavor, like a knit jersey or silk.
