Transitioning the Bold Shoulder
Each year like clockwork, right about now I have to fight the all too tempting urge to start spending. Fall is definitely my favorite season for fashion, so I end up dreading this time of year. There is some comfort, though. I am probably not the only one on a budget trying to pick from all of the fabulous fashions coming down the runway. I hate having to choose between the new fall fashions and the summer sales, so what I try to do is not over-indulge in either direction. One trend that I think works like a charm right now and when things really cool off is a garment embellished with shoulder detailing.
What I like about this trend is in addition to having the ability to cross over into different seasons, it can also give garments a
new life or look. For example, a simple garment like a t-shirt can suddenly work for nighttime, or a plain dress is ready for a special occasion. This trend shows up on both men and women’s clothing and can have the same effect for both sexes, but it tends to be favored more by the ladies.
Shoulder detailing can be done in several ways depending on your taste, the garment, and the look you’re going for, and it works on both long and short sleeves. One bonus when you work this trend on a dress, top, or jacket is that you have the option to skip a necklace or jewelry all together. Your accessory can be what’s on one or both of your shoulders. This works best if the embellishments have a bit of sparkle and shine, like sequins, rhinestones, or beads.
Shoulder detailing also lets you channel different fashion eras. For instance, simple shoulder pads on a dress can have a retro ladylike look, perhaps from the 1940s, and more exaggerated shoulder pads return you to the 1980s. The shoulder pads can be alone or in addition to detail extras like bows, ruching, or pleats in the fabric. This trend can go slight or to the extreme, like you stepped out of the cast of Dynasty or are doing your best Lady Gaga imitation.
For a more contemporary and casual look, check out subtle embellishments like contrasting textiles as far as print and fabrication. Leather can have an interesting rustic or high-fashion look to it for both men and women.
