Those of you with some measure of restraint may still be holding out on hitting the stores and doing some serious damage to your budget. Good for you; I admire your ability to not start shopping. For those of you like me who just can’t seem to resist a little shopping right now, I have a bit of rationalization that you’re welcome to borrow. A perfect purchase that lets you take advantage of the fall trends but skip the buyer’s remorse is a stylish belt.

Belts are one the few fashion items that can be considered a necessity because they can actually serve a purpose along with being ornate. Generally it applies to guys but often belts are simply needed to hold up trousers, but that’s no fun. Over the years belts, have become less of a must have necessity and more of a must-have fashion accessory.

In addition to simply holding up trousers and/or skirts, they are a way to define the waist, add color, add interest, and a perfect way to make an outfit uniquely your own, much like a piece of jewelry or scarf. During these tough economic times, not only budget fashionistas will be literally tightening their belts.

Thanks to clever designers, we can all be frugal and look fabulous. An interesting belt is a perfect way to stretch or simply update your wardrobe. Like any other eye-catching accessory, a belt can update or completely change the look of a garment or outfit. You can instantly work the ladylike or retro trend by creating an hourglass figure.

The final decision is always up to you, but here is one site with some suggestions and key points to think about when belt shopping.

With what is going on in fashion, now is the time to be daring and try something a bit different than you’re used to. Try something new, like a bright or ornate belt with a western or an ethnic flavor. Check out what’s coming down the runway and on the pages of magazines, or just be creative. Think about skipping the traditional leather and opt for fabric, animal skins or ornate cord, braiding, or metals. A simple summer dress or top can take on a fall flavor without making you sweat.

There are some proportion rules to consider for height and weight, but comfort and personal tastes are equally important. Those of you who are a bit more daring may want to check out the sexy harnesses that are coming down the runway, or this season’s retro narrow belts.
