A Trend That Works Overtime

Even some of the most fabulous fashionistas are on a budget, so most of us will be looking for smart items to add to our closet. When I say smart, I mean pieces or garments that can pull double duty like being able to go to work and playm or go casual or dressy with minimal effort. Staying on a budget is key, but you should treat yourself to a few “just for fun” items. One item that is almost too fabulous to be smart is a pair of sequin shorts.

Sequin shorts have been popping up in the fashion world for almost a year. This hot little item started getting attention over the summer last year. They popped in and out of the spotlight in the fall and really caused a scene over the holidays. Normally I have some suggestions for rationalizing a dubious purchase, but I think “just because it’s fun” is sufficient for a pair of these shorts. If you like to take your cues from the stars, simply add the fact they are a favorite of several celebrity fashionistas. Sequin shorts have been worn for day and night both on and off the red carpet.

If you absolutely know it in your heart and soul you won’t wear a pair, then move on to the next trend, but I think you should at least try on a few pairs for fun and for free. I would not be surprised if you change your mind. I agree they look a little “too much,” but that’s the point.  These seriously hot pants can be treated like a fabulous statement necklace, belt, or other accessory, in that you only need this one piece to create a fabulous outfit. Gold and silver are perfect choices, but also check out prints and graphic motifs.

The trick to making this over-the-top fashion item work is to let it shine by pairing it with minimal or no jewelry. Now, do as you please, but my suggestion is when you’re wearing a pair of sequin shorts, it is not the time to break out with a matching sequin top. Instead, pair your sequin shorts with something simple for a top. One option is a solid silk bow tie blouse, or go in the other direction with a denim shirt or a gray or white tee.

Most of the shorts we are seeing are hitting the thigh, but you have other options for lengths. If you’re not sure but you want to dip your foot into this trend, check out a pair of printed or solid shorts with just a few sequin accents. You may find you’re ready to work your way up to a pair that is fully sequined!
