Your lifestyle, your quirk
If you live in a seasonal place, odds are you will need a cold weather coat at some point. Next time you hit the stores or the net to do some shopping, one outerwear option to consider is a down coat.
A down coat is what I consider pulling out the big guns to stay warm when the temperature drops. I like to think I am pretty practical, but more times than not, my fashion side wins and overrides my functional side. I don’t want to freeze, but I worry about the bulk; I will opt for an extra sweater or scarf long before I consider a down coat.
I can’t argue the fact that down is practical for the sake of keeping warm, but vanity often gets the best of me. I just don’t think of down coats when I think of high fashion outerwear. But after seeing what’s available this year, things are looking a little different for the down coat. Several affordable labels like Patagonia have some pretty stylish offerings, and much to my surprise, several fashion heavy hitters like Michael Kors and Vince Camuto have given new life to the down coat. Yes, believe it or not, the down coat has gone kind of glam.
If you’re a fan of color, you can go old school and purchase the traditional bright colors like orange or red, and of course the basics like black, white, and navy, but for 2012, the down coat got a dose of high fashion style. Among the offerings of color choices are gold and silver in matte or shine, and for embellishments there are touches like faux fur around the neck and arms.
Just about every hot trend we are seeing in the fashion world for outerwear is being translated to work on the down coat. Whatever you’re looking for, it’s probably on the store racks. Detailing like cowl necklines, empire waists, bell sleeves, and belts that cinch your waist are turning the once-dowdy down coat downright fashionable.
If I do decide to check out this fabrication, I am pretty sure I would default to basic black, but you could definitely count me in for the faux fur embellishments.
