Red Velvet Pancakes
A Facebook friend posted, “Red Velvet pancakes, where have you been all my life?” I could ask the same question. I have had red velvet cake and cupcakes, but this is the first I am hearing about red velvet pancakes.
I Googled them and quickly found out that red velvet pancakes have been around for quite some time. Actually, right now they are of the latest featured items at the International House of Pancakes (better known as IHOP).
I am not exactly the most daring person when it comes to food, but I have surprised myself by trying a few things I didn’t think I would like. More times than not, I am right. I am really on the fence about this item.
Red velvet cake is yummy, but it’s also one of those things I can take or leave. It can be a bit too much, as one or two bites usually does me in as far as getting a sugar high and satisfying any craving I might have. I did ask for it once for a birthday when I was younger, but today a cupcake is more than enough. When it’s an option, I usually pass.
Don’t get me wrong, the cake is tasty, and I am sure the pancakes are too, but I am not sure if I will be making my way to the local IHOP to give them a whirl. The pictures are enticing, but it actually sounds like a bit too much with the cake and the syrup. I just can’t imagine being hungry enough to finish an order.
The cake itself with butter would probably do the trick for me. Most of the recipes I found offered a cream cheese topping, as do the ones at IHOP, but I still think I may be sent into sugar shock with one bite. I was curious to know what the calorie count was, so here is the lowdown:
IHOP Red Velvet Pancakes - Stack of 4
Calories - 800 (from Fat - 170)
Fat - 18g (Saturated Fat - 6g)
Sodium - 2120mg
Carbs - 141g (Sugar - 61g)
Protein - 19g
I found a few different recipes, and on top of the different varieties, there were also quite a few vegan options. Right now, it’s a toss-up in my mind whether I should break out an apron and try these at home, or hit up IHOP and see if I am a fan. I do have the ability to cook; it’s just that red velvet pancakes might be have a better chance with me if they start off on the right foot (translation: something I haven’t made myself). I will keep you posted on my findings.
