Your lifestyle, your quirk
I remember when the original PlayStation came out. It was gray, rectangular, and more than a little bulky. But oh, how I loved that thing! I played Rugrats, Harry Potter, and Dino Crisis. I played for hours at a time, even when I was a young kid. There was something magical in that lump of gray plastic!
One of my absolute favorite PlayStation games was Tekken. Tekken 3 was the first game of the series I could get my hands on, but I soon collected the rest of the series and watched clips of the movies, too!
Tekken is a “beat ’em up” style of video game, akin to Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter. There is no real plot – you can play arcade style, versus style, or in other game modes, and you choose your fighter and beat your opponents. It’s a classic style with a twist – the characters on the game all have detailed backgrounds and storylines, and in later versions of the game, you can customize outfits and accessories.
The characters in Tekken all have their own stories, which is part of what makes the game so playable. You learn to connect with a character on a deeper level than just their fighting style or appearance. For example, Christie Montero is my go-to fighter, and she’s in the Tekken Iron Fist Tournament because she needs the prize money to pay for her grandfather’s medical bills. Her uncle, Eddie Gordo, is also a playable character in the series. There are other characters like Nina Williams, her sister Anna Williams, and Ling Xiouyu, with deep backgrounds and intense fighting styles. Getting to know your favorite character is part of a loyalty process – and you learn to have pride in your ability to fight with that character.
Another great feature of the series is its customization options. On newer versions of the game, you can change your characters’ outfits and accessories with money you earn by winning fights. For each fight you win, you earn cash, and can then purchase hair bands, new clothing, hats, jewelry, and much more.
The Tekken universe also has a movie to its name – the company is really branching out! The Namco franchise has also combined itself with Street Fighter for a truly unique hybrid game. The two beat ’em ups came together in a new way for Xbox and other game consoles.
If you like Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter or Smash Bros., you should probably give Tekken a shot. The in-depth characterization, multiple additions to the series, and customization options allow you to play the game on a level that other similar games don’t allow you to. It’s hard to find a good story line in a simple fighting game, but Tekken has done that. Enjoy!
