Backstreet’s Back?

All right! It looks like the Backstreet Boys are back in the game...well, at least they’re back in the news. The One Direction haters likely won’t like this news much, because I’m assuming that if you hate one boy band, you hate them all, but they’re likely also to be dismayed because this is further proof of the influence that One Direction is having on the world. I highly doubt that the Backstreeet Boys would suddenly be in the headlines if One Direction wasn’t around, breaking records and setting the world on fire.

To begin, I guess I should point out that AJ McLean is only in the news because he’s having a baby. Congrats AJ! However, this is very interesting, because I feel like this puts a kink in the other most recent development – that Kevin Richardson is apparently “returning” to t the band. First of all, I didn’t even know that he left. How can you “leave” a band that hasn’t had a single in a decade? Are there other ex-members I don’t know about? Is Howie on the ropes too? Perhaps this just means on tour and such, but I still find it highly suspect that this happens when One Direction is all over the place.

Anyway, I’m hoping that this isn’t some kind of switcheroo (now that AJ’s in need of paternity leave, Kevin’s gonna step in to take over his duties). But I’m assuming it’s not because the latest buzz is all about how Backstreet is back. Is there a new album in the coming months? Perhaps a new hit single? This isn’t the worst idea I’ve ever heard. Granted, they are still a boy band, and a ’90s one at that (which is kind of the worst kind), but I can definitely envision some kind of scenario in which the boys have grown with time, and are now capable of churning out a new kind of sound. Maybe Brian Litrell will pull a Justin Timberlake and become unexpectedly awesome.

Besides, it’s not like this is unheard of. New Kids on the Block were able to come out of an almost twenty-year hiatus to release a number one hit. If they can do it, then the Backstreet Boys can too. I’m rooting for them, because this would be one trend I would finally be on the front end of!
