Beyonce Addresses Surrogacy Rumors
No wonder Beyonce is still peeved at a round of rumors that circulated while she was pregnant with her first child in past year. Speculation that the mega pop star was not actually pregnant, but rather pretending to be while a surrogate carried her and rapper husband Jay-Z’s baby, was a pretty brash accusation to make.
“That was crazy. It wasn’t hurtful, it was just crazy,” Beyonce, told People magazine in her recent interview accompanying her being named “People’s 2012 Most Beautiful Woman.”
The 30-year-old singer still seemed shocked that someone would say such a thing. “[I thought] ‘Where did they come up with this?’”
The rumor was started after Beyonce appeared as a guest on an Australian television show and, while bending over to sit down, her dress folding in a manner that made it look as though her stomach collapsed in – something impossible while pregnant.
Beyonce’s representative, Yvette Noel-Schure, told ABC that the rumors of a prosthetic baby bump were "stupid, ridiculous and false."
Beyonce’s mom, Tina Knowles, had jumped to her daughter’s defense, seemingly angry that anyone would suggest her daughter wasn’t really pregnant.
“It was a fabric that folded — does fabric not fold? Oh my gosh, so stupid,” Knowles said.
“I thought it was very unfair and very cruel that someone would think that someone would be that diabolical to keep up a charade like that for nine months,” Mama Knowles continued. “As a mother it was painful for me to hear the crazy rumors. And I even had people ask me, which was so ridiculous.”
We have to agree with Beyonce’s mom, as it’s pretty farfetched to think one of the busiest women in show business has the time to put on a charade for more than a year (including all the time she’s been spotted breastfeeding in public since Blue Ivy’s January 7 birth). Surrogacy is more accepted by the public than ever these days too, so who would assume that Beyonce and Jay-Z would want to go through such great length to hide something like that anyway?
The rumor is a good reminder to take celebrity gossip with a grain of salt. Using your own common sense, you can usually guess correctly if a rumor is realistic or not. Wearing a prosthetic baby bump for nine months? Probably a safe bet to guess “not true.”
“There was so much love and well wishes from all over the world — it made it easier to deal with the stupid rumors,” Knowles shared, assuring her daughter and son-in-law are not letting the rumor get them down or take away from their exciting experience as new parents.
