Courtney Love Sued By Assistant

Some non-surprising news of the week – it sucks to work for Courtney Love. The Hole frontwoman’s former assistant, Jassica Labrie, is suing her for a whole host of damages, including wrongful termination, failure to pay wages, negligent misrepresentation, breach of contract, and infliction of emotional distress.

According to Labrie’s report, Love "acted with an improper and evil motive amounting to malice or despicable conduct."  Well, duh. We’re talking about Courtney Love here. Why would anyone be surprised by that?

Labrie began working for Love in June of 2010 as an administrative assistant and “forensic research aide.” (Yeah, you’d think the job title would have been the first clue to Labrie that she was dabbling in a sketchy situation.) The pay was decent for an assistant at $30 an hour, plus all the perks of working for a rock star, such as the promise to have a job in the Nirvana biopic and extravagant bonuses. 

Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, considering Love’s history, none of the promises – including a regular paycheck – came to pass in the year Labrie worked for Love.  Labrie’s legal complaint states that Love had her working 60-hour weeks without overpay.

Labrie was also put in an awkward moral position when directed by Love to hire a computer hacker and to send fake legal correspondence. Labrie ultimately declined both of those tasks. Her attorney explained that Love wanted a computer hacker to change records for businesses she owned or thought she owned.

Perhaps most disappointing for Labrie was that Love had promised to help pay for Labrie’s tuition to Yale, but never followed through. Labrie’s legal complaint also cites thousands of dollars still unpaid from her regular wage. When Labrie complained to Love about her unpaid salary, Love promptly fired her.

The former assistant claims she suffered from headaches, insomnia and other medical conditions resulting from Love’s conduct toward her. Again, not terribly surprising. I get a headache just looking at pictures of Courtney Love sometimes.

There has been no word from Love’s lawyers or representatives, as there is a great chance she doesn’t have one. Who in their right mind would jump aboard that sinking ship? Plus, it sounds like she doesn’t have a record of actually paying people money owed.

Love, who just turned 48 this month, is best known as the singer for the rock band Hole and for marrying the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. Love and Cobain have one daughter together, Frances Bean, 21, who has legally emancipated herself from Love.
