No one can accuse Katie Holmes of being a gold digger. The 33-year-old actress initiated a divorce from Tom Cruise, 50, this past June, but asked for – and received – very modest numbers for post-divorce support from her extremely famous former partner.
Holmes and Cruise signed a prenup before their 2006 wedding, so Holmes knew she could not ask for spousal support. Still, despite Cruise being the highest-paid male actor in Hollywood this past year, according to Forbes magazine, he will only have to pay out $33,333 a month for child support for his 6-year-old daughter, Suri Cruise, with Holmes.
Sure, 33K is as much as some people make in an entire year, but coming from a man worth more than a quarter-billion dollars, it’s pocket change. Cruise’s monthly payouts equal approximately $400,000 annually, and will total $4.8 million by the time Suri is 18, and Cruise is no longer required to supply child support payments.
To put this into perspective, consider that comedian and actor Eddie Murphy is required to pay his ex-girlfriend and former spice girl Melanie Brown $51,000 a month for their daughter. By the time their daughter is 18 years old, Murphy will have forked out more than $10 million in child support!
After six years of marriage, Holmes shocked the world – and apparently also Cruise – by filing for divorce on June 28. Although all details are not known, it has been reported that Holmes planned her actions for the divorce in private for months, using disposable cell phones to speak with her father (a divorce lawyer) for advice, as well as her own divorce lawyers. The amount of trouble Holmes went through to keep everything hidden suggests that the divorce was not a mutual decision, and apparently she was scared of what Cruise might think, so she didn’t give him a choice in the matter.
The Cruise-Holmes divorce was arguably the biggest headline of the summer, and was only bumped from the tabloids by the Kristen Stewart cheating scandal. In addition, Homes and Cruise kept things quiet; although they knew the public wanted to know the details, the couple insisted it was a private family matter.
Holmes and Cruise released a joint statement in July, saying, "We are committed to working together as parents to accomplish what is in our daughter Suri's best interests. We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other's commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other's roles as parents."
