Your lifestyle, your quirk
Anyone who has been paying attention to any kind of music news has likely seen a picture or at least a news report about the hologram of Tupac that showed up at Coachella. If you’re unfamiliar, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg graced the stage together and paid the ultimate tribute to their deceased friend and colleague. With the special effects skills of Oscar-winning technical experts and an almost unlimited budget, they created an almost unbelievable hologram of the late Tupac Shakur. So real, in fact, that many people across the internet are convinced it was real….but we won’t go there.
The most interesting part of all this is that it seems like this may become the newest trend for tours. Like 3-D films, it seems that once just isn’t enough. Recent reports have surfaced of a TLC reunion tour, with a hologram in place for the late Left Eye. T-Boz seems pretty jazzed about it, because she thinks fans would welcome it. Apparently, fans have been asking for a hologram for years, but there was never the money or momentum. Apparently, there is now!
So, what do you think of all this, Style Quirkers? To me, it seems kind of intriguing. I mean, there’s no better way to pay respects to the legacy of these fallen artists than to give their fans a glimmer of what it’s like to be in all their glory, but it’s also somewhat strange, am I right? It seems like we’re almost cheapening their memory. We’re picking them out at their most exposed, and trying to replicate something that really can never be replicated fully. What if there’s a malfunction? I mean, holograms are entirely made of light, so what if a light (or a few) goes out, or gets turned around, or mixes signals? What was supposed to be a perfect image could end up being a deformed, tragic misfortune.
I doubt that will stop them from trying. And with all the money and resources we have at our disposal, I’m sure that only the best tactics will used to utilize it. But how far will it go? Will Left Eye just return for a cameo? An entire song? Or will they base their choreography for the entire show around her, and bring her back from the beginning to end?
I guess only time will tell, but I’ll be keeping this issue on my radar from here on out. Will you?
