Has Katie Holmes Returned to Catholicism?
The latest gossip in the Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise divorce drama is that she has stepped away from Scientology and returned to the Catholic Church. The story broke out midday on July 11 when Huffington Post contributor “Naughty But Nice Rob” got the scoop that Holmes had reportedly registered as a parishioner at New York City’s Church of St. Frances Xavier.
This will undoubtedly add fuel to the fire that Scientology led to a rift between the couple and ultimately led to the demise of the TomKat marriage. Most of the rumors point to Cruise’s alleged plans to enlist their daughter, Suri, in the militaristic arm of Scientology known as Sea Organization, or Sea Org.
Holmes has not acknowledged or said anything about returning to Catholicism, but the former couple has released a statement saying, "We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other's commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other's roles as parents."
So, will Suri follow in her father’s Scientologist footsteps? Or break away as Holmes apparently has?
Suri’s religious future remains unclear, as it is still uncertain whether Holmes has returned to her Catholic roots. Most news media outlets have followed the Huffington Post lead and reported that Holmes registered as a parishioner. The Daily Beast reported that the priest of St. Frances Xavier, Father Joe Costantino, had no clue who Katie Holmes was until members of the press began to contact him for comment. CNN’s Belief Blog also received no comment from the church.
