Your lifestyle, your quirk
Justin Bieber is known for being a nice kid – er, “adult” now – he’s 18, folks! He has a reputation for making time for the fans, participating regularly with the Make a Wish Foundation, being a true gentleman to his girlfriend actress Selena Gomez, being a true mama’s boy, etc. So what on earth upset the young star so much that he would straight hang up on an interviewer?
It likely takes a lot to make the Biebs mad enough to risk his nice guy reputation with a move like hanging up, but the DJ Mojo from Mojo in the Morning was pretty darn good at pushing all the right buttons.
Mojo began his assault by comparing Bieber to Justin Timberlake. Bieber quickly said he considers Timberlake a very talented artist and doesn’t mind the comparison, but he didn’t appreciate being told he sounded exactly like him.
“I hope you take this as a compliment,” Mojo started, “When I heard 'Boyfriend' for the very first time. I thought it was Justin Timberlake's single.”
Who would take being told they sound exactly like someone else as a compliment? It strongly suggests that you don’t stand out as an artist.
“Man, that’s crazy because our voices sound nothing alike. I mean, I'm not trying to sound like anyone," Bieber replied pretty politely, considering the slight he’d just been dealt.
Bieber gave a nod of respect to Timberlake by adding, "Saying I sound like someone else is not really a compliment ... if you were to say 'I heard some Justin Timberlake-esque things,' I would take that as a compliment."
Mojo tried to recover and complimented Bieber’s entire CD, but Bieber brought the conversation back to explaining why he wouldn’t want to be remembered as sounding like someone else. He insisted his voice and his music has matured, and he “wants to be remembered as Justin Bieber.”
Mojo stepped up his ammo for the next round, making a joke involving Bieber’s mother (it is known Bieber is close to his mother). Mojo joked that the One Direction singer Harry Styles might hit on Bieber’s mom, as Styles is known to have a thing for older women.
Obviously not amused, Bieber replied, "I don't think you should worry about me [and my mom with Harry Styles]. Worry about your mom, bro."
Although it was intended to be a firm-but-polite response to a rude comment, Mojo came right back, saying his mother was deceased. Oops, of course, but how would Bieber have known that?
By that point, the interview had completely soured and Bieber decided the best way to end it was a clean break – he hung up.
