Katie Holmes Interview Foreshadowed Divorce
Katie Holmes’ filing for divorce last week seemed to come out of nowhere - but did it really? Or were the signs all there and the world didn’t see them because we didn’t think to look for them?
Six weeks ago, Holmes conducted an interview with Elle magazine that revealed far more than it appeared to at the time. When the magazine interviewer asked Holmes to talk about being in her thirties, the actress said, “'I definitely feel much more comfortable in my own skin. I feel sexier. I think in my twenties, it’s like you’re trying too hard to figure everything out.”
Little did we know that she was already planning her divorce tactics at that point. She offered one line that now seems quite
prophetic: “I’m starting to come into my own. It’s like a new phase.”
Thirty-three-year-old Holmes can also be found on the magazine cover dressed far more sexily than we’ve grown accustomed to seeing her – she’s got a white tank top unbuttoned to reveal a black bra. Her flawless long brunette locks are worn down with her bangs arranged bluntly, drawing attention to her large brown eyes staring directly at the camera in a “don’t mess with me” kind of way. Another hint of her attitude to come.
When the interviewer referred to her as “Mrs. Tom Cruise,” Holmes reportedly snapped back with, “He has been Tom Cruise for 30 years. I know who I am and where I am and where I want to go, so I want to focus on that.” So there.
As information about the divorce slowly leaks to the press, it is becoming apparent that Holmes planned her “divorce attack” for weeks with the help of her father, Martin Holmes, a divorce attorney in Ohio.
She recently traveled to China for business, and while there, had all of her phone numbers and emails changed without alerting anyone – even her friends.
“When new cell phones arrived, nobody could reach her,” a source told People. “Her old best friends from last week don't have her new number, no e-mail. She's unreachable.”
Holmes also replaced some pivotal members of her security team that had been hired by Tom with individuals she picked herself, and started moving into a new apartment in New York. She deflected suspicion from Cruise over the move by telling him the new place was necessary to help her avoid the paparazzi and provide more privacy for her and their daughter Suri, as it had an underground parking garage.
Holmes apparently went to great lengths to set the ball rolling without Cruise having so much as a hint that trouble was brewing. According to a source for People magazine, “[Katie] was talking to Tom on the phone up until last week saying, ‘I love you.’”
One source told the New York Post that Holmes did not seem keen on discussing Cruise at all in her Elle interview. “'Katie didn’t speak about Tom in a lovey-dovey way at all. She deflected the Tom questions and brought them around to herself.”
The August edition of Elle with Holmes’ interview goes on sale July 17.
