Spice Girls Reunion in London!
After much speculation over whether the former Posh Spice, Victoria Beckham, would participate, all five original members of the insanely popular 1990s pop band gathered in London this week to promote the new musical, Viva Forever, based on their music.
Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice), Melanie Brown (Scary Spice) and Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice) gathered at the St. Pancras Renaissance London Hotel for the reunion and photo shoot. The particular location was selected for nostalgic reasons, as it was the background for the group’s music video for their 1996 breakout song “Wannabe.”
The Spice Girls split up more than a decade ago and have only been reunited once since then, in 2008 for a reunion tour.
The new Spice Girls-inspired musical is written Jennifer Saunders of the British comedy series Absolutely Fabulous, and it is being produced by Judy Craymer, who also produced Mamma Mia. The musical is about a young girl named Viva who applied for a television talent show with her female singing group. She is offered the chance to move on – but only as a solo act, so she has a very difficult decision to make.
All five Spice Girls reportedly had a hand in creation of Viva Forever. So what do the Spice Girls have to say about how it turned out?
"It's better than we could ever have imagined," Chisholm said.
“They sing it better than us,” joked Brown.
Beckham said the show would "be introducing a whole new generation to Girl Power."
The Spice Girls were a national phenomenon in the 1990s, selling more than 75 million records worldwide and becoming the best selling female group of all time. Their debut album, Spice, is also the bestselling album by a female group in history, with more than 28 million copies sold. They quickly became the stars of a Girl Power movement.
In spite of their astronomical success, Halliwell decided to leave the group in 1998. The remaining four women put out the fourth Spice Girls album, titled Forever, before the group separated.
Although promotions have clearly begun, the show doesn’t actually open until November 27th. Good news! You still have time to find yourself a Union Jack dress and dangerously high platforms to attend the film in traditional Spice Girl style!
