Tom Cruise’s Lawyer Draws the Line

Tom Cruise is usually one to wear his heart on his sleeve (remember his couch jumping days of yore?), so the public has not quite been sure how to take his complete silence since Katie Holmes filed for divorce from him last month. Of course, when celebrities opt not to talk, the tabloids happily do the talking for them. Simply put, rumors are created and then reported.

Of course there are thousands of rumors swirling around the Cruise-Holmes marriage demise, but Cruise’s lawyer drew the line at a tabloid questioning Cruise’s dedication and love for his 6-year-old daughter, Suri.

Just about any parent would agree that Life & Style did cross a line by posting a picture of a very sad-looking Suri being held by her mother and the headline, “Suri In Tears: Abandoned By Her Dad.” Never mind that the picture is a few years old, as Suri is noticeably younger in it.

Cruise’s lawyer Bart Fields let loose on the publication via email, stating, "That, as anyone knows who saw their photos together yesterday and today, is a disgusting, vicious lie."

Fields is referring to Cruise and Suri’s reunion since the split was announced, as it was announced while Cruise was away filming a sci-fi flick called Oblivion. He came to New York the moment the filming wrapped up, and was photographed carrying his daughter, who was curled around her dad, clinging to him like a little koala bear and clearly not abandoned, into his hotel.

"Until this week, Tom was shooting a film on location, but he spoke to Suri every day," Fields’ email continued. "He's with Suri right now; and he was with her the day before Life & Style trumpeted their cruelly false accusation. Tom dearly loves Suri and the last thing he would ever do is abandoned her."

Fields is also quoted in the current edition of People magazine explaining that Cruise is not “bitter” about the divorce, although he is quite sad. Fields also explained that the divorce settlement was reached so quickly because Cruise is making all of his decisions based on Suri’s well-being.

"Tom tried his best to do what's right for Suri,” Fields said.

Sometimes silence can say more than words ever could, and in this particular situation, Cruise’s silence to the media seems to be working in his favor. Whether he chooses to break his silence on the topic eventually (and let’s face it, he’s Tom Cruise, he’s going to want to talk it out) or not, few people are actually doubting that he loves his daughter very much.
