By now, anyone who follows celebrity news has been filled in on the whole “Kristen Stewart cheating on longtime boyfriend and Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson” thing, right? The whole situation is quite sad, but it’s also being way overplayed in the media. Just when it seemed like every angle had been covered three times over, a surprising candidate found a new one; comedian Will Ferrell managed to bring some humor to the depressing situation.
In his August 2nd interview with Conan O’Brien, Will Ferrell came onto the stage and took his seat, looking completely dejected. He stared at the floor and said nothing. Conan prompted Ferrell to share what was on his mind, by tentatively asking, “I’m sorry, is something wrong Will? You seem upset.”
“I’m okay. I don’t want to talk about it,” Ferrell deadpanned in return.
After some additional prompting from Conan, Ferrell gave in and started with a sigh and said, “I don’t know if you follow the news at all, but there’s this actress – Kristen Stewart – okay?” The audience started giggling, seeing where he was going with it.
Ferrell continued to explain to Conan how Stewart cheated on Pattinson (using their celebrity tabloid names of “K-Stew” and “R-Paz”) and pretending to be fighting tears the whole time. He actually did a great job, as Conan and the audience were all chuckling at Ferrell’s delivery, but he maintained a straight face and appeared to be sincerely upset. The whole success of his joke was based on the absurdity of a 45-year-old man being so broken up over the break-up of a 20-something Hollywood couple.
Ferrell continued his act, adding to the ridiculousness by wondering if he was somehow responsible for the split. “I don’t know if there’s anything I could have done to prevent it, or…” he muttered, trailing off sadly.
Ferrell had the audience howling when, after Conan tried to offer a few comforting words about things being getting worked out and being “fine,” Ferrell immediately shouted in faux anger, “It’s not going to be fine! EVER! It’s NEVER going to be fine!”
The interview/skit concluded with Ferrell yelling about Stewart, “She is a trampire! That’s what she is!”
Conan’s audience showed their appreciation with hoots, hollers, and clapping, clearing enjoying the mockery of the situation.
Although cheating on a significant other while in a committed relationship is certainly not funny in any way, there is just something about Will Ferrell that keeps me from ever getting mad at him. He just has a kind look to him, which helps translate his humor as all in good fun and never intended to offend. In a time when many Twilight fans are devastated to see the real life version of their favorite on-screen couple falling apart, I’m sure there were many people grateful for the smile Ferrell provided them.
