Have you ever felt so unmotivated at work that you sit for hours and seem to accomplish nothing? We’re not accusing you of being lazy, but something must be going on if you seem to get distracted easily on a daily basis, right?
Well, a new study has connected the way exercise and food affects your work habits. You may not be lazy at all! Apparently, eating poorly and not exercising enough can lead you to be unproductive at work.
The study was published in the journal Population Health Management. It demonstrated that eating unhealthily is linked with a 66 percent increased risk of loss of productivity. If you smoke and eat poorly, you’re making your unproductivity even worse. Research suggests that smoking leads to a 28 percent increased risk of loss of productivity.
“Total health-related employee productivity loss accounts for 77 percent of all such loss and costs employers two to three times more than annual healthcare expenses,” study researcher Ray Merrill said.
The study consisted of 19,803 people who work at one of three large companies. It was found that people between ages 30 and 39 were most likely to experience loss in productivity, while people ages 60 and older were least likely. That’s a little surprising, since you’d expect to lose productivity as you age.
In addition to food and exercise influence the way you work, there are certain industries that lead to higher chances of productivity loss. If you work in the service or transportation industry, you’re more likely to be less productive. Those working in farming, mining, construction, and fishing were least likely to lose productivity.
Another thing to take into account is lack of sleep. Researchers discovered that the more sleep deprived a person is, the more his or her work suffers.
“The longer someone is awake, the more the ability to perform a task, in the case of visual search, is hindered, and this impact of being awake is even stronger at night,” Jeanne Duffy, associate neuroscientist at Brigham and Women’s, said.
So get some rest, eat right, and start exercising! You’ll be on top of your game in no time.
