Indoor Owls

Owls are the bird of the moment! Now the feathered friends are moving from pendants and sweatshirts into home décor. Once huge back in the ’70s, the cyclical nature of trends has brought owls back into vogue. You know the trend advice to “put a bird on it?” Well, don’t do it unless it’s an owl. Those flocks of birds on power lines are so overdone; now it’s time to embrace some nocturnal creatures around the house. Autumn is the perfect time to adopt owls into your home: falling leaves mean that owls will be more visible in the trees, and their hooting will be audible on those chilly nights.

Set a festive fall table with some owl plates. West Elm has some chocolate brown and olive green dessert plates with owls nestled in trees. When picking table linens, you can pull colors from the leaves in the plates or pick out some pops of colors like bright oranges and reds. Owl dinnerware will be an unexpected and chic alternative to all of the typical turkey décor at Thanksgiving, so surprise guests with some on-trend style.

Create a whimsical display on mantles with some decorative owls. Pier One has a selection of owls made from natural straw-like materials. If you need a bit more practical purpose to the items in your home, the store also sells tealight holders shaped like owls.

Add just a pop of owls with a decorative throw pillow. Target’s collection with Patch NYC features a modern black and gold throw pillow with a majestic owl. The collection also includes bedding that features owls and other woodland creatures. If you’d rather get a bit more cartoonish, Simons has a sleepy owl pillow made of fleece.

Since owls were in style back in the 1970s, you can find a good deal on some vintage owl décor. Scour garage sales, flea markets, and vintage stores for owl items. Warning: they may be in some very outdated colors that won’t go with the rest of your home. Remember that you can paint over ceramics, giving an outdated owl new life as a chic monotone piece. Best of all, it will have a story behind it. If you have less time for shopping secondhand or if you’d like a piece that has already been refurbished or repurposed, try a site like Etsy and search the vintage listings.

Really love owls? Light up a room with your love – or at least a lamp shaped like your beloved bird. Target’s collaboration with Patch NYC has produced an owl-shaped lamp with a chic birch-patterned lampshade.

Now your whole home can be as stylish as your owl-filled jewelry box!
