Can Astrology Help You Find Love?
When Robert Pattinson recently became single, I was curious to find out if we would be compatible. We don’t exactly share the same social circle, so I consulted an astrology website and was somewhat dismayed to find out that, because I am a Libra and Rob is a Taurus, our compatibility ranks at the tepid “Just Friends” mark. To be honest, I’m not really into Twilight anyway. But now I’m wondering if astrological compatibility should be used to help us find love—or be used simply for entertainment.
What most people know as their astrological sign is their sun sign. Sun signs are designated according to a person’s birth month and date. Each sign has a set of defining personality characteristics and is represented by a symbol. Libras, for example, are symbolized by the scales of balance and are known to be diplomatic, charming, and indecisive. Those born under the sign of the Taurus like my “friend” Rob Pattinson, are identified as patient, determined, and jealous, and are represented by a bull. The compatibility—or lack thereof—between two people can be determined based on their astrological attributes.
Undaunted in my quest to find my celebrity match, I continued to test my compatibility. I scored slightly higher at “Warm Fuzzies” with Tom Cruise, whose sign is Cancer, but was advised that I lacked enough depth for this relationship and should move on. I was warned against pursuing Benjamin McKenzie, a Virgo, because eventually everything I do would irritate him. I thought it couldn’t get worse than “Just Friends” until I attained “Cold Fish” status with Bradley Cooper, a Capricorn. Fearing that I would remain a lonely Libra, my final attempt at a celebrity match was Johhny Depp, a Gemini. Finally a good result: “Call the Firehouse!” Mr. Depp and I would be a “complementary couple,” astrologically speaking.
Sun sign compatibility may help shed some light on a current relationship. It might even be a way to obtain a deeper understanding of a romantic partner. It certainly could be used to gauge the potential of a prospective suitor. However, relying on the cliché “What’s your sign?” should be avoided. Not everyone is open-minded about astrology, so keep this matchmaking method under wraps, at least until after the first few dates. The most important thing to remember about astrological compatibility is to keep it in perspective. I won't be turning down a dinner invitation from Bradley Cooper, despite the astrological warning signs!
