Ice-T’s Rap Documentary Coming Soon to a Theater Near You

Ice-T has recently added “director” to his already varied resume. The 53-year-old performer’s debut directorial film, Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap, is coming to theaters in North America on June 8. Something From Nothing was shown at this year’s Sundance Film Festival with a positive reception. The film is a documentary about classic rappers across the United States and their methods and influences for song writing. The film includes such big names as Snoop Dogg, Mos Def, Q-Tip, Eminem, Nas, and Kanye West. The film is produced by Paul Toogood and co-directored by Andy Baybutt. Ice-T has admitted that his highest hope originally for the documentary was just to make it to Sundance, so even he was surprised at that reaction the film got. “It was a big deal to get [to the Sundance Film Festival]. Then it sunk in, ‘What if the people don’t like it?’ We finally screened it, and at the end people were cheering and clapping and bopping their heads. At the end, I got a standing ovation…now I’m on top of the world,” Ice-T explained. After Sundance, it was announced that The Indomina Group acquired worldwide rights to Ice-T’s documentary and planned to release it in theaters. The Hollywood Reporter has also printed that interviews taped for—but not used in—Something From Nothing may be used for a potential television series. Ice-T is best known for his career as a rapper, which began in the 1980s, but he faced a great deal of controversy and pushback for one of his 1992 songs, entitled “Cop Killer,” as he was accused of glorifying the murder of police officers. After a nearly two decade-long rap career, Ice-T shifted his focus to acting and has been portraying (ironically) NYPD Detective Odafin Tutuola on the NBC police drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
