Late to the Party: A Real Review of Avengers

I hate to admit it, I almost never go to the movie theater.  The last movie I saw at the theater was J.J.'s Star Trek, which was fantastic!  With long hours at work and so many other mediums of entertainment I can see, I often wonder how can the average person go to the movies on a regular basis.

On a rainy tuesday in New England, my wife and I drove 30 minutes to the best theater around.  Arriving late, we had to opt for the 3-D version of Avengers.  I admit also I have not seen any of the new 3-D movies; the last movie I saw in 3-D was Jaws 3-D!  Yes they made a 3-D version of Jaws 3 and it was horrible!  I went in expecting a bad experience after hearing all the complaints about 3-D, mainly that the movie was poorly lit.

The movie starts and I am blown away by the previews!  The new Pixar Movie Brave and Frankenweenie looked incredible in 3-D!  The added realism was simple amazing!  This upped my hype for Avengers even more.  The preview for Spiderman was a bit of a disappointment, and showed what I like least about 3-D: certain scenes seemed to blur or flash. It could be just my eyes, but certain scenes just didn't work but that negative outweighs the realism.

I need to tell you that if you have not seen any of the previous movies (Iron Man 1 and 2, Captain America, Thor, or either of the Hulk movies) do so FIRST.  I had the pleasure of re-watching all the movies the week prior to going to the theater.  If you only have time for one or two, I would say Captain America and Iron Man are MUSTS.  The main artifact in Captain America is  the center of the story for Avengers, and Iron Man just kicks ass.

It was great seeing the start of the Avengers initiative.  The heroes don't mesh well together, and their fighting each other made the film.  The funniest part of the movie involved Hulk and Thor; no spoilers, but I do say that Hulk stole the movie!  Yes, the green monster that had two previous flops is the green paste that sticks this team of heroes together.

Hulk is portrayed not as some dumb monster, but a monster that knows what is good and bad, and just does what Hulk does: smash and kick ass.  Iron Man's entrance is done only the way Tony Stark would have done it, hijacking the radio signal to blast some rock and roll as he flies in, Black Widow is simply amazing, beautiful, and easily very dangerous.  You put all that together, add a splash of a thunder god and an alien menace, and you have yourself an EPIC movie that everyone should see!

The success of The Avengers certainly means another movie is on the way and for fans of the comics, the main baddy of the next movie is revealed in the end credits.  This baddie is well-known in the Marvel universe, and you will instantly realize who it is when you see him.

What this movie has is heart. The Avengers will leave you with excitement and good feelings. You will laugh with the Hulk, feel like kicking ass with Tony Stark, and proud of Captain America and for what he stands for.

*** Spolier Alert*** Highlight to read!  The main baddie for the next move? It's Thanos!!!!!!!!!!!!   While I got the spoiler tag on, I want to discuss some particulars, specifically Hulk.  There are several scenes in particular that I must talk about, I just can't get them out of my head, they were SO AWESOME!  The battle between Hulk and Thor is epic, but only a lead-in to the funniest scene in the move.  Hulk and Thor really go at it, leaving no winner.  Later in the movie, Hulk and Thor are fighting the alien menace together, they destroy a wave of baddies and you think you get a rest - Hulk and Thor are standing next to one another trying to catch their breaths, then WOMP - Hulk sucker punches Thor and he goes flying offscreen, then Hulk laughs!  I about died laughing!  The next also involves Hulk. He meets up with Loki and he starts giving a long speech how Hulk is no match for a god, then all of a sudden Hulk Smash!  He picks up Loki and throws him around like a rag doll, smashing him so badly.  Hulk walks away a Loki-shaped crater in the ground saying "Puny God."  Those scenes have a realistic comic book feel, it's hard to describe, but just simply amazing!
