Tossing His Hat Into the Ring: Ferrell’s New Movie
With the upcoming election (which we won’t mention), it’s natural the some comedies are going to be born out of the situation. We’ve seen plenty of other examples of political comedies: Swing Vote, for instance. But now, Ferrell is coming out with his own political funny.
The film’s site gives a detailed synopsis:
“When long-term congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) commits a major public gaffe before an upcoming election, a pair of ultra-wealthy CEOs plot to put up a rival candidate and gain influence over their North Carolina district. Their man: naïve Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), director of the local Tourism Center. “
The one thing I’m wondering about is whether or not Ferrell will have anything really political to say. Is he just making a funny film, or is he actually going to say something about government? I sure hope he does. He’s in a perfect position to send any message he wants to. Let’s just hope he chooses the right one!
Will isn’t the only big star in the movie. Zach Galifianakis’ character reminds me of Basil Marceaux, recent candidate for governor of Tennessee. Because I live in Tennessee, I heard a lot about him, but you may not have. If you don’t know of him, I’ll just let you Google him. I won’t ruin the surprise for you.
The Campaign is about Brady’s campaign; he’s a four-term Senator who’s always run unopposed. Until, that is, Marty Huggins has something to say about it! The trailer gives us a pretty good idea of what kind of humor the movie is emphasizing – absurdity. Classic Ferrell absurdity. At one point, Brady goes in to punch Huggins, but Huggins ducks out of the way, and Brady makes contact with a baby. Yep, he punches a baby. That’s gonna be great for his campaign.
I hope this movie lives up the hype that is Will Ferrell. After all, he’s got to come up with something as good as Anchorman and Step Brothers. Can he and Galifianakis do it? I think so. But I hope they use this opportunity to make a statement, too. The movie is set to be released August 10. Keep an eye out, and I’ll see you in theaters!
