I am not a recruiter or image consultant, but prospective employers are starting to check out the FB page of applicants. This may not be an official part of a background check done by HR, but it’s being done. I did read a post from a Facebook friend who has her own employment agency. This isn’t word for word, but her post went something like this: “A company who I sent an applicant’s resume to took a look at their FB page, and changed their mind about inviting them for an interview.”
Seems the applicant had some photos and posts that made the company turn away from the prospective employee. She didn’t post any response from the applicant, but I can see both sides of this coin. I didn’t see the Facebook page, but I have to say I am leaning toward the decision of the prospective employer. I have heard this scenario before, and I have also seen lots of interesting pictures. Unfair, maybe, but the prospective employer may consider themselves lucky they saw the page first. The job market is tight, so even those of you not looking for a job may want to think twice before you post certain pictures, and remember, once they are out there, they’re out there. Who knows, your future in-laws may be looking you up on Facebook, too.
